Red Bull Music Academy and MUTEK present the
2012 Application Phase and Canadian Session Tour with Martyn + Egyptrixx -
Toronto, ON – February 9, 2012 – The Red Bull Music Academy has travelled around the world, with previous stops including Berlin, Toronto, London, Madrid, Melbourne, and Cape Town. The Academy’s 2012 edition will be held in New York City. One of the most iconic music cities on the planet, N.Y.C has been immortalised in countless songs, and is the birthplace of many of the world’s most beloved creative movements. The city still holds an intoxicating sense of possibility, drawing itinerant music makers from across the States and beyond.
The Academy invites inspired vocalists, producers, musicians, instrumentalists and DJs to apply to be a part of our next journey, five weeks' worth of workshops, lectures, concerts, club nights, and all-round music exploration held in this unique city, soaking in its diverse cultural and musical legacies.
The Red Bull Music Academy is an international workshop that was founded in 1998, and touches down in a different city each year. Over two fortnight-long 'terms', some of the finest purveyors of rhythm and sound from all over the world gather between the Academy's walls. Two groups of successful applicants, themselves representing a diverse range of music styles and methodologies, attend lectures by musical pioneers, and work on their own tunes in custom-built studios. By night, they have the chance to perform in some of the host city's most iconic clubs and concert halls.
Interested producers, musicians, DJs, instrumentalists, and vocalists can download an application form from the Academy website from February 2, 2012 and send it off with a selection of their tunes by April 2, 2012.

In support of this year’s Academy, Dutch electronic producer Martyn (Brainfeeder/3024) and Toronto’s own celestial beat-maker, Egyptrixx (Night Slugs/Ramp Recordings), will be co-heading a national tour with Mutek. The tour highlights the academy to potential applicants through Red Bull Music Academy Session lectures, Q&A and concert series. Preceding each show is an intimate look at the Academy and its application process hosted by mymanhenri. Potential applicants in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal will get a taste of the Red Bull Music Academy, with an exclusive Red Bull Music Academy Session Lecture with Egyptrixx and Martyn.
The Canadian Red Bull Music Academy Alumni includes some of Canada’s front-runners in new music. The London 2010 edition had RnB, electronic artist ANGO (LuckyMe Records) and Hip Hop bass heavy producer Lunice (LuckyMe Records,Mad Decent) representing Canada along with Toronto’s Amenta and Ninjatune artist Poirier. Both Ango and Lunice were signed to UK imprint LuckyMe Records, following their involvement with Red Bull Music Academy. The Madrid 2011 edition saw three Canadians take part, including: Xavier Leon (one half of Sibian and Faun, whose track “Sorry” was recently tipped as one of Diplo’s favorites of 2011); Toronto’s EXETER, who’s bass heavy beats had him opening for the likes of SBTRKT and Araabmuzik in 2011; and Boogiehowser from Edmonton, AB, a fan of fusing ambient, hip hop and garage music, and a crowd favourite at the 2011 academy.
Red Bull Music academy is proud to enter new partnership with MUTEK: International Festival of Digital Creativity and Electronic Music, a relationship that beings with this cross-Canadian tour and culminates into a Red Bull Music Academy stage at the MUTEK festival in Montreal May 30, 2012 – June 3, 2012. Six days after the tour wraps up in Calgary, on Tuesday, March 13th, MUTEK will reveal its first round of performers for the 13th edition.
